The West Bengal government declared a fortnight-long state-wide lockdown on Saturday, starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday, May 16 and ending at 6 p.m. on May 30. It also instituted a night curfew, which will be enforced from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night starting Sunday. This came after the largest single-day increase of 20,846 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Friday, bringing the total to 10,94,802.
This
time, the state is practically shut down. Nabanna declared a 15-day closure of
all government and non-government offices, except those affiliated with
emergency services, from Sunday to May 30. It was determined that the local
train would be stopped sooner. This time, it was planned to fully suspend bus,
subway, and ferry services. Taxis and automobiles will not operate unless there
is an emergency.
Only
emergency services will be permitted, according to the state's announcement,
with groceries and shops selling critical goods remaining open from 7 a.m. to
10 a.m.
Only
emergency services such as health, courts, power, drinking water, media,
sanitation, petrol pumps, and car parts will be eligible, according to the
state government's announcement on the day. Other than that, all government and
private offices would be closed. Malls, spas, movie theatres, gyms, and
swimming pools will all be closed.
